Your air conditioner has been sitting idle for months. Maybe six. Maybe eight. Dust has settled on the coils. Leaves have piled around the outdoor unit. A spider has probably built a web somewhere it shouldn’t be.

And on the first 90-degree day of the year, you’re going to flip that thermostat to COOL and expect everything to just work.

It usually does - until it doesn’t. And the worst time to discover your AC has a problem is 4 PM on a Saturday in July, when every HVAC contractor within 50 miles is already booked solid for the next week.

A simple spring checklist takes about 20 minutes and can save you from that headache. Here’s exactly what to check before the real heat arrives.

Change or inspect the air filter first

This is the cheapest, fastest, most effective thing you can do for your cooling system. A dirty filter is responsible for more AC problems than just about anything else - frozen coils, short cycling, weak airflow, high energy bills - you name it.

Before you run the AC for the first time, pull out the filter and hold it up to the light. If you can see light clearly through it, you’re fine. If the light is dim or blocked, replace it. If you can’t remember the last time you changed it, replace it anyway. It’s $10 and 60 seconds.

For spring startup, always start with a fresh filter. Even if it looks clean, a filter that sat in place all winter has been collecting dust from the air moving through your system when the furnace or heat pump was running for heat. Put a new one in so you know you’re starting the cooling season with a clean baseline.

Which filter to use

Stick with MERV 8 for most homes. It catches pollen, dust, pet dander, and mold spores without choking your system’s airflow. Write the install date on the cardboard frame with a marker. That way you know exactly when it went in and when it needs to be changed again - usually 60 to 90 days from now, depending on pets and allergies. Clear the outdoor condenser unit

The condenser unit - that metal box sitting outside your house with the fan on top - needs room to breathe. Most homeowners don’t realize their AC’s outdoor unit pulls air in from the sides and exhausts it out the top. If the sides are blocked by overgrown bushes, tall grass, leaves, or debris, the system can’t shed heat properly.

When a condenser can’t expel heat, the refrigerant doesn’t cool down enough before cycling back inside. The system runs hotter, works harder, uses more electricity, and cools your house less effectively. In extreme cases, the compressor can overheat and fail - and that’s an expensive repair. Spring cleanup checklist for the outdoor unit

  • Trim vegetation back at least 18 to 24 inches from all sides of the unit. Bushes and shrubs have a way of growing into the unit over winter when nobody’s looking.
  • Remove leaves, grass clippings, and debris from inside the unit. Pop off the top grille (with the power off - more on that in a second) and gently vacuum or hose out any debris that’s collected inside.
  • Check for visible damage. Look for bent fins on the coil (the aluminum slats around the sides), dents in the cabinet, or signs that something has been chewing on wiring.
  • Make sure the unit is level. The condenser needs to sit on a flat, stable surface. If it’s sunk into the ground or tilted, the compressor can have oil circulation problems.
  • Check the concrete pad. If the pad is cracked or shifting, the unit can settle unevenly over time.

Safety first - kill the power

Before you do any cleaning near the outdoor unit, turn off the power at the disconnect switch (the gray box mounted on the wall near the unit) or at the breaker panel. The fan can spin up unexpectedly if the thermostat calls for cooling. A few minutes without power won’t hurt anything. It might save your fingers.

Check the condensate drain line

Your AC doesn’t just cool the air - it removes humidity. That moisture has to go somewhere. It drains out through a small pipe called the condensate drain line, usually a white PVC pipe that runs from the indoor air handler to a floor drain, a pump, or the outside of your house.

Here’s the problem: that drain line can get clogged with algae, mold, and slime over the winter. When it clogs, water backs up inside the air handler. Most systems have a safety float switch that shuts the AC down when the drain pan fills up, preventing water damage. That’s a good thing - but it means your AC stops working on the hottest day of the year because of a slimy drain line.

How to clear the condensate line

  1. Locate the drain line. It’s usually a 3/4-inch PVC pipe coming off the indoor air handler or furnace. Look for a tee fitting with a cap on top - that’s the access point.
  2. Pour a cup of white vinegar down the access port once a year. Don’t use bleach - bleach is harsh on the PVC and the drain pan. Vinegar kills algae and mold without damaging anything.
  3. Flush the line with water. You can use a wet/dry vac on the outdoor end of the line to pull any clogs through, or blow through it gently from the access port.
  4. Check the drain pan. If you can see standing water in the pan under the air handler, the drain line is plugged. Clear the clog before you need the AC.

Do this in spring before the first hot day, and you’ll avoid the most common “my AC stopped working” call that HVAC contractors get in June.

Inspect the evaporator coil if you can

The evaporator coil lives inside your air handler or furnace cabinet. It’s the part that actually gets cold - refrigerant flows through it, and a blower fan pushes air across it to cool your home. A dirty coil can’t transfer heat effectively. The system runs longer, uses more energy, and may start freezing up.

Most homeowners can’t easily access the coil - it’s behind a sealed panel that requires removing screws. But if your filter cabinet or air handler door comes off easily, take a look. Shine a flashlight through the viewport or access opening.

What you’re looking for: A clean coil looks like shiny aluminum fins. A dirty coil looks dusty, fuzzy, or caked with debris. If it’s dirty, call a pro to clean it. Coil cleaning requires coil cleaner, a sprayer, and careful rinsing - it’s not a DIY job for most homeowners, and you can damage the fins if you’re not careful.

If you keep clean filters in the system and change them regularly, your coil should stay clean year after year. A dirty coil almost always traces back to dirty filters or running the system without a filter at all.

Test the thermostat before you need it

Set your thermostat to COOL and drop the setpoint about 5 degrees below the current room temperature. Walk around the house. Listen for the outdoor unit to kick on. Feel the supply vents - they should start blowing cool air within a few minutes. If the thermostat seems to misread the room, check for thermostat placement mistakes before blaming the equipment.

If nothing happens, check:

  • Is the thermostat set to COOL, not HEAT or OFF? You’d be surprised how often this is the issue.
  • Is the temperature set low enough? If it’s 70 degrees in your house and you set the thermostat to 72, it won’t call for cooling. Drop it to 65 or use the “cool to” test setting.
  • Is the breaker on? Check the breaker for both the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser unit.

If the system runs but the air isn’t getting cold, you might be low on refrigerant - a problem for a licensed pro to diagnose. The low refrigerant warning signs are worth knowing, but the fix is not a DIY recharge. Test it now, not in July.

Listen for unusual sounds

Your AC makes normal sounds - a hum when the compressor kicks on, the rush of air through ducts, a gentle fan whir. Any new sounds deserve attention.

  • Squealing or screeching - Could be a failing blower motor bearing or a belt that needs replacing.
  • Banging or clanking - Could be a loose or broken component inside the compressor or blower assembly.
  • Clicking that doesn’t stop - Could be a failing contactor or capacitor trying to engage but not catching.
  • Hissing or bubbling - Could be a refrigerant leak.

If you hear something new, write down where it’s coming from and whether it happens constantly or only when the system starts up. That information helps your HVAC contractor diagnose the problem faster - and that saves you money on the service call. Check the refrigerant lines

The two copper lines running between the outdoor condenser and the indoor air handler should be insulated where they’re exposed. The larger line (the suction line) should have foam insulation wrapping it. If the insulation is cracked, missing, or chewed by rodents, replace it.

A bare suction line sweats in humid weather. That condensation drips onto your ceiling, into your walls, or onto your furnace. Water damage from a sweat line is slow and invisible until it’s not - and then it’s expensive.

You can buy foam pipe insulation at any hardware store. Slip it over the line and tape the seams. It takes about 10 minutes and costs $5.

What about a professional tune-up?

If you’ve done everything on this checklist and your system seems to be running fine, congratulations - you’ve done more than most homeowners ever do. But there are still a few things worth having a pro look at:

  • Refrigerant charge - Only a licensed contractor can check and adjust refrigerant levels.
  • Electrical connections - Loose connections can cause intermittent failures and, in extreme cases, fires.
  • Capacitor health - Capacitors wear out over time and are a common cause of no-start conditions on hot days.
  • Heat pump reversing valve - If you have a heat pump, the reversing valve should be tested during the cooling season to make sure it’s switching properly.

That’s a reasonable price for a pro to go through the system, clean the coils, check electricals, and give you peace of mind heading into summer. When to just call a pro

If your AC is more than 12 to 15 years old, or if it had problems last summer, or if you’ve already turned it on and found it’s not working correctly, stop troubleshooting and call a licensed HVAC contractor.
